Native marsupial's surprise airport appearance delights Hobart travellers

A real possum has caused an unexpected stir at Hobart Airport after being discovered nestled among plush soft toys in the terminal's gift shop, offering passengers an authentic encounter with one of Tasmania's most iconic native animals.

Staff at the airport's retail outlet discovered the uninvited visitor at approximately 11:45am on Wednesday, positioned comfortably amongst the stuffed animal merchandise in what workers described as an remarkably calm demeanour.

From calm to chaos

Liam Bloomfield, multi-site manager for Lagardere AWPL at Hobart Airport, described the initial discovery as relatively peaceful.

"We found the possum sitting within the native plush. It looked like he was pretty comfortable with his friends there."

However, the situation escalated rapidly once the possum ventured beyond the confines of the gift shop into the departure lounge, where it triggered what airport workers characterised as "pandemonium" amongst gathered passengers.

"We had passengers here, there and everywhere, taking videos," Mr Bloomfield said. "It was a bit of a mad rush to make sure it was safe and no passengers were disrupted."

Swift resolution by airport management

The real possum was "safely escorted" out of the terminal by airport management, preventing any potential disruption to airport operations or passenger safety.

The incident raises questions about how the native marsupial gained access to the secure airport environment. Airport authorities remain uncertain of the entry point, though ongoing building redevelopment works have been identified as a possible explanation for the breach in the facility's perimeter.

Wildlife in urban spaces

The unexpected visitor highlights the challenges posed by Tasmania's expanding urban infrastructure encroaching on native wildlife habitats. Possums, common throughout Tasmania, occasionally venture into human-occupied spaces seeking food sources or shelter, particularly during seasonal changes or when construction disrupts their natural habitats.

The incident comes as wildlife management remains an ongoing concern at major transport hubs across Australia, where native animals increasingly encounter developed environments.
