Darwin's legendary Beer Can Regatta draws thousands to Mindil Beach

Thousands of spectators descended on Mindil Beach in Darwin on Sunday for the 52nd edition of the iconic Beer Can Regatta, one of Australia's most distinctive and quirky community events. Despite fewer vessels competing than in previous years, the event maintained its status as a major drawcard for locals and visitors alike.

The regatta, which has become synonymous with Darwin's relaxed beach culture and entrepreneurial spirit, saw homemade racing vessels constructed primarily from aluminium beverage cans competing for supremacy on the water. Among the participants was a team of military personnel, including Corporal Rob Meharg, who described the experience as "absolutely bucket list sort of stuff" after harbouring aspirations to compete in the race for two decades.
