Mass shooting near Johannesburg leaves 12 dead, 9 wounded

South African police have launched a manhunt for more than 10 suspects following a late-night attack at an informal settlement near Johannesburg that has claimed at least 12 lives and left nine others injured.

The shooting occurred at the Jumpers informal settlement in the Cleveland suburb on Wednesday, with gunmen arriving in a white Toyota minibus and systematically opening fire at multiple locations before escaping in the same vehicle.

Victims and casualties

Police confirmed that nine male victims and three female victims were killed in the attack. Eleven died at the scene, whilst a 12th victim succumbed to injuries whilst receiving hospital treatment.

The nine injured survivors remain under medical care as investigators piece together details of the assault, which targeted a densely populated informal settlement housing vulnerable communities on Johannesburg's periphery.
