Human remains discovered in search for missing Tasmanian man
Volunteers searching for a missing Tasmanian man have uncovered human remains in the state's north, with police confirming the discovery during a renewed public effort to locate 76-year-old Peter Willoughby, who disappeared in October last year.
The remains were found in the Eagle Hawk Tier area near Underwood, north of Launceston, on Saturday during an intensive community-led search operation. Tasmania Police said forensic testing is underway to confirm the identity of the deceased.
Investigation underway
Tasmania Police Inspector Aleena Crack said preliminary assessment suggests the remains belong to an adult male, though formal identification procedures remain pending.
"Forensic testing is yet to be completed, however at this stage we can confirm the remains appear to be an adult human male," Inspector Crack said. "The volunteer contacted police immediately after the discovery, and officers from the northern district, along with specialist forensic personnel, are attending the scene."
The discovery marks a significant development in a case that has gripped the northern Tasmanian community for eight months. Mr Willoughby, from Scottsdale, was last seen in October 2025, prompting an extensive police investigation and multiple public appeals for information.
Community search effort bears results
The volunteer who made the discovery immediately alerted authorities, ensuring forensic integrity at the scene. Police said Mr Willoughby's family has been notified of the findings and are being supported through the investigative process.
The renewed search operation, which commenced on Friday, reflects ongoing community engagement in resolving the case. Volunteers from across the region have dedicated time and resources to the effort, demonstrating the close-knit nature of northern Tasmania's communities.
Next steps
Tasmania Police is continuing its investigation at the scene, with specialist forensic personnel working to establish a conclusive identification. The remains have been secured for examination by forensic experts, with results expected in coming days.
The discovery comes as Tasmania Police continues to appeal for any additional information from members of the public who may have details relevant to Mr Willoughby's disappearance or the circumstances surrounding it.
